Weaving and Spinning

wool and loom with yarn

Participants will get to see weaving in action — an ages-old technique of interlacing warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads to produce textiles! Using a table-top loom, we will provide a short demonstration and then let others try their hand at making fabric. We will also bring sample of various kinds of weaving and textiles we’ve done.

About Moira

Moira White has been playing with fibre almost her entire life, beginning with making dolls clothes as a child, leaning to knit at 7, and then moving on to making clothes, embroidering, quilting, and spinning before becoming obsessed with weaving 10 years ago. She has benefitted from her involvement in the Ottawa Valley Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild ever since where she continues to be inspired and challenged. Moira particularly loves weaving tea towels, bed covering, scarves, baby blankets and textiles for the table.

About Ruth

Ruth Cooper has enjoyed working with fibres and yarns since her childhood. She learned to knit and crochet in Brownies and later enjoyed embroidering her jeans and making macramé hangings in the early 70’s. She learned to weave in the 1980’s at the Crafts Guild of Manitoba in Winnipeg. She has carried on with her love of weaving in Ottawa and has co-ordinated the projects on the 100” loom for the Ottawa Valley Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild for the last several years.
