When Wes Craven returned to the slasher with his 1996 Scream, he wanted to shake things up and revitalize the genre. In Scream, he did, deconstructing the genre. All the characters are aware they are in a horror flick and refer to the rules of the horror genre as the killer Ghostface stalks them. The entertaining cast includes Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, Drew Barrymore as bestie Casey Becker, Rose McGowan as Tatum, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as fan-favourite Deputy Dewey Riley, Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher, Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis, and Jamie Kennedy as chorus Randy Meeks, reminding the viewers about the horror codes. Henry Wrinkler of Happy Days fame, the Fonz, plays the high-school principal.
