One cannot overstate the impact of George A. Romero's 1968 Night of the Living Dead, from its then controversial casting of a Black protagonist, Ben (Duane Jones), and the tale of a group of strangers holed up a farmhouse fending of zombies as the social structure implodes. Featuring Barbra (Judith O'Dea), Helen Cooper (Marilyn Eastman) and Harry Cooper (Karl Hardman). Night took three years to make. Director George A. Romero cast actors, extras, family and friends to get the whole thing done, improvising effects and birthing a series of zombie flicks and even more imitators. The film ushered in an entirely new portrayal of zombies in this allegory about late 1960’s America that continues to inspire.
