Library Lecture Series: Romeo and Juliet

An opened book surrounded by glasses and a cup of coffee

Join us for a discussion of one of the most famous love stories of all time, led by Carleton Professor, Grant Williams.

The heartbreaking tomb scene from Romeo and Juliet  - "Thus, with a kiss, I die!" (Act V, scene iii) - easily lends itself to film adaptation. In this lecture, we will explore the scene and how film directors George Kukor (1936), Franco Zeffirelli (1968), and Baz Luhrmann (1996) each use the scene to shape death and love according to their own cultural moments. Come discuss this tale of star-crossed lovers in their final moments of the play.
